Am I the only person that loves Miranda from Mass Effect?!
I just don’t understand the hate. She was personally one of my favorite characters in the game and if Garrus and Thane weren’t on my team (which only happened 2% of the time) she was on my team.
I mean, when I first played ME2 and I was attached to my ME1 team, I hated her and wanted her to go away and get off the Normandy (felt the same about everyone who wasn’t in ME1) but I grew to really like her as the game progressed.
I just don’t understand.
Because fandom automatically hates (and labels as a “bitch”) any and every female character who:
• Has a personality other than sweet, demure, bubbly, cheerful, and completely non-threatening
• Takes pride in herself or her accomplishments
• Has strong opinions of any kind
• Is ever angry, especially at the player character (in video game fandoms) or at popular male characters
And other criteria as well, but those are the ones that instantly spring to mind. Miranda fits just about all of them. Personally, she’s not my favorite, but I do like her.
See, I take issue with this.
I love Morrigan and Jack and they fits all these too.
I still don’t like Miranda. Because I just DON’T. Because I feel like she’s arrogant and self righteous and full of shit and her personality traits IRK me to no end. Also because she’s OBVIOUSLY fanservice for male players who want the “perfect” sex kitten. Because goddamn, how many more T&A shots of her do we need to get that point across.
Morrigan and Jack on the other hand are manipulative, brilliant and use their sexuality like fucking weapons. They are unapologetic bitches and give exactly NO FUCKS about what anyone thinks. And I love them with the heat of a thousand suns.
The thing about Miranda is that I think that arrogance and self-righteousness is a cover for a lot of low self-esteem. She was genetically engineered to be “perfect”, which sets her apart from everybody. What point is perfection if you’re always alone? You have Jacob, who’s one of the most solid good guys around, say that she needs a better sort man than he. But who is ever going to be good enough for perfection?
And for all this superiority. That has kept her isolated and turned into a commodity to be bought and sold, she’s still not good enough. Shepard is still better than her. Just by being a beautiful, organic, flawed human. Shepard is better. And in the end, perfection itself is not good enough.
I think Miranda is a hard person to like but I do have a lot of sympathy for her.
Pretty much all this. ^^ Miranda will never be my favorite person from the series, but I think she’s really interesting and I have a lot of sympathy for her. I just replayed her loyalty mission last night and it shows you just how alone Miranda feels, especially after what happens with Niket. Really, the only person she feels connected to in the universe is a sister she never spoke to unless Shepard encourages it. The mission shows how no matter what her genetics, no matter how much she boasts, no matter how many missions she’s completed, Miranda is still a human who makes mistakes. She’s not emotionless, and not as heartless as she makes herself out to be. It gives her a lot of interesting depth.
But yeah, there’s still a lot I wouldn’t agree with her on, and the T & A shots bother me. That’s not Miranda’s fault, though. That is the direction the team went that extends far beyond just her.
